Gneiss

Gneiss is a type of metamorphic rock, which has been subjected to very high-temperatures and pressures. It is formed by the metamorphosis of granite or sedimentary rock and displays alternate layers of different minerals. Our gneiss, from the Isle of Lewis in North-west Scotland, is among the oldest rocks in the UK. Hardness 6-7 (Mohs).
